Gears

Changing the direction of motion.

Bevel gears, as shown on the left, intermesh and change the plane in which force is applied and circular motion takes place.
In the case shown on the left gear "A" turns in a vertical plane while gear "B" turns in a horizontal plane.

The hand drill is a common machine using bevel gears. Vertical, circular motion by the handle is transfered as horizontal motion to the drill bit via the bevel gears.
