Production of carbon dioxide

In industry carbon dioxide is produced in a number of ways.
One is the production of carbon dioxide through the fermentation of sugars to alcohol according to the reaction below. The reaction is catalysed by enzymes.
C6H12O6(aq) => 2C2H5OH(aq)
+ 2CO2(g)

Carbon dioxide can also be obtained by heating limestone (CaCO3) in a lime kiln.
CaCO3(s) => CaO(s) + CO2(g)

In the laboratory, carbon dioxide is produced using a Kipp's apparatus, as shown on the right. Dilute hydrochloric acid and marble chips (CaCO3) react together to form carbon dioxide according to the equation below.

CaCO3(s) + 2HCl(aq) => CaCl2(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

Carbon dioxide can also be produced in the kitchen. When sodium hydrogen carbonate (baking powder) is reacted with vinegar, it produces carbon dioxide, water and a salt. Click to seea 120 kb video.
